Absolutely wonderful to gather with my friends of NERN – the New England Regional Network of the Environmental Leadership Program.
Sarah Smith invited us to her place in Narragansett, Rhode Island. Two blocks from the beach. Super fun! I got a ride with Steve Erario – now this is a really cool guy. Steve has been working for the State of Maine to build out an accounting system to evaluate the carbon emissions avoided through a residential weatherization program. He has managed to sell the avoided carbon as offsets to Chevrolet among others. We chatted about all sorts of things, especially, how to position him as he moves on. He wants to get out of the woods and into a real city somewhere, and his Governor is a total nutjob!
I also caught up with Jesse Steadman as he’s just started a new position as Assistant Planner at the Town of Stowe. Ari Bain reviewed the latest with her work at Except and a new enterprise devoted to innovation in urban agriculture and sustainable food systems. It was great to hear from Amber about her new job leading sustainability efforts at Yale and from Greg with his fearlessness in all directions! We cooked and joked all weekend. I’m so glad o have this crew as sustainability pro peers!
Jesse, Amber, Steve, Ari, Greg, Aladdine, Mieko, myself and Sarah – thanks to Eric for taking the picture and Josh for keeping it real!
Sunday morning I was up to see the balanced rock beach. We had strolled by in the night and I had thought there were people in weird poses at first. Great to stargaze on the beach. So in the morning I went back to do some more stargazing:
the SUN! Here at dawn, coming up red as red can be (the phone camera can’t take it and makes it look yellowish). Somehow, I timed it perfectly to catch the flash of the lighthouse at the south end of Jamestown across the Bay. Very cool I must say.
Also fun to sleep out on the deck at Sarah’s, and meet her lovely old pup, Lola. Hard to get dogs to smile for the camera. In the lower right of the picture is the remnants of our efforts to play “The Settlers of Catan” – quite a fun new game I recently picked up.
Thanks for the good times NEEERRRRRRNNNN!!!! See you all soon!
