The New Executive Director of the USGBC MA Chapter!

The following is a letter I sent to the Board of Directors of the US Green Building Council, Massachusetts Chapter. They have just confirmed me as their first Executive Director, starting at the end of October. I am really excited to work for this organization. It’s a great place to combine my capabilities in community-building, fundraising, organizational development, green buildings and real estate. A great fit for me.

The Chapter handles the education of LEED professionals in the state, and should be a strong voice of advocacy for state and local government initiatives supporting green buildings and sustainable design. We (I am already a member and volunteer on the Communications Committee) have about 120 members and a budget of about $120K. We are about 40th, in the middle of the pack, in terms of size, compared to others of the 79 chapters throughout North America. Boston is a stronghold of sustainable design – professionals, businesses, institutions and government initiatives. We will be growing significantly.

Hello Everyone!

I’m honored to join the Chapter in this leadership capacity. I look forward to meeting and working with each of you. I’m excited to focus the message and value proposition of the organization, increase membership, and grow the funding so we can provide more services to green building professionals. In the coming weeks, I will make time to understand more about the Chapter – the volunteers on committees, the sponsors, the partner organizations and others so I can know better where we fit in the ecosystem of our industry in Massachusetts. I know I have a lot to learn! We have an amazing Natox community of sustainable design professionals throughout Massachusetts, and our organization is the entity to facilitate and reinforce connections among us.
I want to strengthen the impact of the USGBC MA on the marketplace and regulatory frameworks for environmental performance in the built environment. As the market for green buildings grows, we will increase opportunities for our constituents. Massachusetts has a lot going on related to sustainability & the built environment; we can and will be a much bigger deal in the realm of USGBC chapters nationally, and the industry in general. I look forward to working with the Chapter’s leaders to fine-tune the strategic plan and break it down into tactical objectives for the coming year. I anticipate needing each of you to help me – so thank you in advance already!
More about me personally is at The Grey Lee Net. There, you can see an invitation to a program about the connection between sociological research on human behavior change mechanisms and building-related environmental performance. I hope you each will consider attending this program I’ve helped organize on Sept 6 from 5-7pm in Boston. It would be good to connect with each of you viaLinkedIn or Facebook so we can start getting to know each other. You can follow my personal tweets @greylee and my sustainability/real estate tweets @Green2ROI – I’m happy to follow those of you with feeds or handles.
Thank you again to the many volunteers who have supported the search process. Thank you to you all for your ongoing contribution to this organization. I look forward to working together!
Cheers,
Grey Lee
