Campaign Director — Job Description – Responsibilities

The Campaign Director will lead a large well-funded multi-partner collaborative focused on the long-
term sustainability of the Colorado River. The 20-year goal of the Campaign is to promote cost
effective solutions to meet human water demand while protecting and improving healthy river flows.
The Campaign Director’s role will be to ensure that campaign activities knit together and to identify
gaps where new efforts need to be developed. Ultimately, the Campaign Director is responsible for
ensuring that a strategy to succeed is in place and operating at all scales of the complex and multi-
faceted initiative.

Work closely with the Collaborative’s leadership and funders to continuously refine a vision of
where the effort needs to be in order to advance its 20-year goals and bridge the gap between
campaign operations and that vision.

Ensure that each of the short-term campaigns and projects have clearly identified strategic
direction and leadership. Work with participants and other stakeholders to identify areas where
campaigns are not delivering their intended results and work collaboratively with members to
address shortcomings. Ensure that groups are making the best use of available resources and
being proactive about creating opportunities that benefit the larger goals of the campaign.

Identify deficiencies in capacity and opportunities for synergy.

Monitor activities related to Colorado River management and ensure that the larger economic,
political, and legal trends are taken into account. Actively engage in related fora to identify and
capitalize on opportunities to create strategic alliances.

Strengthen (but not replace) communication among the participants in the Collaborative.
Ensure two way communication between Collaborative leadership and other Colorado River

groups and interests including grassroots efforts on local tributaries.

Identify, and implement ways to increase the power and effectiveness of the effort

Conduct and/or facilitate regular reviews and evaluations of campaigns and projects to ensure
an adaptive management approach. Encourage risk taking and creativity.

Qualifications and Experience

Western water is a complex issue. The most important qualification is the ability to grasp the details
without losing sight of the long-term strategic goals. The candidate must have passion for the
Colorado River and the challenge of balancing natural and human needs.

The position calls for a senior conservation professional with experience leading complex policy and/
or grassroots campaigns. Other relevant experience includes media, government, water management,
business and political experience. Demonstrated experience managing change in a complex
organization or network is desired. Experience on Colorado River issues is desired, but emphasis will
be on leadership experience as well as strategic vision and creativity. At least 10 years experience in
conservation or natural resource management, policy or advocacy is desired.

The candidate must be a strong communicator with vision yet, be able to build upon and take
advantage of the rich expertise among the collaborating organizations and supporters. The candidate
must be able to lead a diverse group of internal team members and build powerful external
partnerships. The job requires self-direction and decisiveness combined with proven ability to work
